Bulk beta-carotene powder is a plant-based antioxidant and provitamin A supplement used in pet diets to support immune function, vision, and skin and coat health. Natural plant-derived beta-carotene extracted from carotenoid-rich botanical materials such suitable plant sources, followed by concentration and stabilization.
Provitamin A Conversion: Dogs convert beta-carotene into vitamin A in the liver as needed. (Note: Cats cannot efficiently convert beta-carotene into vitamin A due to a missing enzyme, though they can still benefit from it as an antioxidant).
Immune & Antioxidant Support: Neutralizes free radicals and reduces cellular oxidative stress.
Skin and Coat: Promotes healthy sebum production, deepens coat pigmentation (especially in red-factor birds or long-haired dogs), and helps reduce shedding or dryness.
Reproductive & Vision Health: Supports overall eye health and reproductive performance in certain animal lines.

Beta-carotene regulations vary according to whether it is marketed as a nutritional additive, color additive, feed material, or component of a compound feed.
For animal food coloring, beta-carotene is addressed under the U.S. color-additive framework, including 21 CFR §73.95 and its incorporation into animal food requirements. The permitted identity, purity, diluents, labeling, and conditions of use must be checked for the intended application.
Animal-food suitability must be evaluated separately from human-food ingredient approval. Buyers should verify whether the complete preparation, including carriers, is acceptable for the intended animal food use.
The European Union renewed the authorization of beta-carotene and a beta-carotene preparation as feed additives through Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1148, which entered into force on June 18, 2026.
The authorization includes:
3a160: Beta-carotene, solid form.
3a160i: Preparation of beta-carotene containing at least 10% beta-carotene.
The authorization addresses chemically synthesized beta-carotene with defined purity criteria. Its annex also includes conditions concerning storage, heat-treatment stability information, and user protection. For calves receiving milk replacers, a maximum content of 50 mg active substance per kilogram of complete feed at 12% moisture is specified; other animal categories are listed separately.
This does not mean that every naturally sourced or differently formulated beta-carotene preparation automatically qualifies under the same authorization. Buyers must match the product’s identity, manufacturing route, and composition to the applicable authorization.
For Great Britain, feed additive authorization and retained or amended domestic rules must be reviewed independently of current EU authorizations. Northern Ireland may be subject to different applicable arrangements.
This table is useful when customers request quotations for 10%, 20%, or 30% beta-carotene preparations.

| Application | Candidate formulation | Required validation |
|---|---|---|
| Dry dog food | Stabilized beadlets | HPLC assay before/after extrusion; oxidative stability |
| Wet dog food | Dispersible stabilized grade | Retort retention and color stability |
| Dog soft chews | Encapsulated fine powder | Mixing uniformity, chew texture and serving intake |
| Cat treats | Stabilized preparation | Color stability; ensure dietary preformed vitamin A |
| Pet supplement blends | Fine powder or beadlets | Blend homogeneity, serving-level assay and shelf life |
| Ingredient | Nutritional distinction | Buyer consideration |
| Beta-carotene | A provitamin A carotenoid | Assess species-specific vitamin A nutrition, stability and permitted use. |
| Lutein / zeaxanthin | Not provitamin A carotenoids | Evaluate their own specifications and intended function; they are not interchangeable on an equal-weight basis. |
| Preformed vitamin A | A different vitamin A form | Include in total vitamin A calculations and assess species-specific requirements. |

Q1:Can beta-carotene replace vitamin A in cat food?
No. Cats need preformed vitamin A.
Q2:Is beta-carotene water-soluble?
The pure compound is practically insoluble in water; certain formulated powders are water-dispersible.
Q3:What is the difference between 10% and 20% powders?
The nominal active content is 100 versus 200 mg per gram, respectively; carriers may also differ.
Q4:Can it be used in dog soft chews?
Potentially, after checking regulatory suitability, mixing uniformity and stability.
Q5:Is it stable in extrusion?
Retention depends on processing and grade; test the actual process.
Q6:What documents are available?
Request batch COA, TDS, SDS, carrier and origin declarations and regulatory support for the specific grade.
Q7:Does Zenpet offer customized grades?
Submit the target concentration, carrier and application for a feasibility review; availability is not yet confirmed.
